Is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Safe?
Jiu Jitsu is an art that combines grappling techniques, throws, joint locks, chokes, and strikes. The earliest evidence can be traced back to ancient Indian civilizations when Buddhist monks traversed the region to travel through the mountainous North. This is when they developed what we refer to as the Jiu-Jitsu fighting style.
The word jiu-jitsu itself means “gentle art”, implying the idea that there will be no use of more violence than is necessary to mitigate it. In other words, Is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu safe? Yes, for even beginners. This technique involves using your opponent’s body against them to subdue them or to make them give up their violent intentions.

Starting with Basic Positions
If you’ve never trained before, your instructor will start by teaching some basic positions. These positions are the foundation of every other position in Jiu Jitsu. They’ll give you an idea of how to move safely and effectively while grappling. If you’ve never trained before, there’s no need to worry. We will teach you the proper form and help you develop your technique. Once you feel comfortable, you can move on to more advanced moves.
Basic Key Moves for Beginners:
Shrimping and Bridging
Shrimping is to be crucial to grappling and important for putting moves together. You begin with lying flat on your back, feet out straight and hands up. Rolling onto one side, bring both feet close to your butt. Your focus should be to lift your hips off the ground and towards your head, and straighten your legs as you move.
Gripping is essential to BJJ training. The term “hand fighting” is commonly used in the combat sports community as it often determines who gets the better of a given grappling exchange. Make sure you grab onto the right thing, if not, you won’t have enough leverage to control your opponent.
Passing the Guard
The main objective of passing the guard is to side-step around the opponent’s leg and simultaneously pull aside the opponent’s leg or pin their legs to the ground. This takes time and a lot of practice to execute well.
Learning how to breathe properly is one of the most important skills of your BJJ training. It is easier to have smooth movements and transitions when you’ve mastered how to breathe smoothly while rolling. If your breath control is suffering, movement and technique can risk becoming sloppy. Controlled breathing also helps you focus to remove self-doubt and other negative emotions that can distract you before stepping on the mat.
Practice Training at Home
If you’re new to jiu jitsu, you might not realize how much you’ll need to learn before you start practicing with others. That’s why it’s important to start slow and build up slowly. You should focus on learning the basics first, such as proper form, breathing techniques, and how to move safely. Once you’ve mastered those things, you can begin sparring with other students.
Don’t Forget About Nutrition!
It’s also important to eat right while you’re training. Make sure you’re getting enough protein and carbohydrates during your workouts. This will help keep you feeling energized and focused throughout your training sessions.
