Jiu Jitsu
Jiu Jitsu at Seven Spears is designed for students of all ages, from young children to adults. Our programs focus on building confidence, discipline, self-defense skills, and physical fitness in a safe and supportive environment. With age-appropriate instruction and experienced coaches, students develop both strong technique and lifelong personal skills on and off the mat.

Tots and Tigers Jiu Jitsu
We understand parenting young children can be a real challenge. You must balance their natural inquisitiveness and high energy with trying to teach them the basic skills they need for school and life.
Discipline, sharing, and self-control are all things they need to learn to be successful. The ideal setting is one that’s got some structure but works with kids at their current developmental level. If they have fun while they’re learning, they’ll be more likely to retain those lessons and learn the skills they need.
Coordination and Control
Young children who learn Jiu Jitsu find out quickly that each movement must be intentional. They learn to control their movements to the best of their ability. They also practice hand-eye coordination and learn about their bodies. That means they’ll be less likely to be unintentionally destructive.
Learning to Focus
Getting young kids to pay attention can feel like an impossible task. The structure of our Tigers Jiu Jitsu classes shows kids the importance of focus and teaches them by having them apply it to easily-achievable tasks. The focus they learn in the dojo is something they’ll take home – and into the classroom. That’s why kids who study Jiu Jitsu tend to be good students, too.
Dealing with Frustration
Jiu Jitsu instruction requires students to pursue goals to earn new belts. Young kids can easily become frustrated when they don’t get what they want, but studying jiu jitsu helps them learn the power of persistence. The physical activity in our classes also helps kids manage stress and anxiety by allowing them to burn it off in a safe and constructive way.
Good Sportsmanship
Losing is not anybody’s idea of fun, but we all need to learn how to accept a defeat gracefully and move on. We teach students that losing is part of life – and it’s what you do after you lose that tells people who you are. Even though Jiu Jitsu is an individual sport, we cultivate an environment of supportive teamwork where students root for one another.

Kids Jiu Jitsu
A Few Words from Rodrigo Mundurca
I’m Rodrigo Munduruca, Head Instructor here at Seven Spears Jiu Jitsu. As a Jiu Jitsu instructor with extensive experience training kids, there is nothing better than seeing them grow firsthand. But more important than the martial arts skills they learn… is the personal skills they develop and carry for life. Because Jiu Jitsu training is so much more than just armbars, take-downs, and getting the next colorful belt. It’s about developing confidence, discipline, character, focus and respect.
With every class we teach, your kids are growing in mind, body and character. That’s because Jiu Jitsu provides instant positive feedback. Through learning to focus on the core moves, they develop discipline and respect. They can instantly see and feel a difference, making them destined to build confidence, self-awareness and self-respect. And of course it’s a ton of FUN!
That’s why I love teaching martial arts to kids in this community, and why I know your kids are going to LOVE training. So please have a look below to find out exactly how your kids can benefit from our fun martial arts classes.
Lifelong Character and Success Traits
Your kids’ everyday friends aren’t the main concern anymore when it comes to character development. Now you have to worry about all the negative and harmful influences that the internet can introduce into your children’s lives. The true benefit of our classes are the character and success traits that are developed through martial arts training.
Through learning the skills and techniques of jiu jitsu, to the guidance and inspiration of our instructors and the positive social interaction with their fellow classmates, your kids will develop a whole list of skills.
Fitness Disguised
Face it. Between the foods we eat and the constant sitting and staring into screens and devices, many kids aren’t getting enough regular exercise. Our Kids Jiu Jitsu classes for kids are full exercise routines disguised as a boatload of fun! That’s because they are jam packed with activities, games and drills that are all designed to disguise the repetition of training.
Of course it’s important for your kids to exercise and wear themselves out – they stay healthy, sleep well, and develop their minds and bodies. But just as important, our classes will help develop at a young age the physical habits they need to grow into healthy adults.
Self-Defense for Anti-Bullying
We never want our kids to have to use these skills in modern life, but every good parent still wants their kids to be safe. That’s why our Kids Jiu Jitsu training is very serious about teaching your kids the skills needed for self-protection in any circumstance, from the neighborhood bully to a stranger on the street (and so much more).
But knowing how to defend oneself is only half the battle. Our classes teach your child the respect and self-discipline needed to diffuse a situation without violence whenever possible – as well as the knowledge to know when force is the only way to safety.
Tons of F-U-N!
We never forget… kids are kids and they deserve to have some fun! We can’t guarantee that their normal school teachers are making learning an enjoyable experience, but we DO guarantee that your kid will have a blast in our Kids Jiu Jitsu classes.
It really is a challenge to design a class that keeps children focused on learning, respect, and discipline while still having fun… but our classes are created just for that. They are so full of ideas, activities, and games that your kids will never get bored or stagnate. It’s also a fantastic and healthy environment for them (and you) to make friends with other like-minded students. It really is a place where laughter, cheer and happiness abound.

Teens Jiu Jitsu
Jiu Jitsu training gives teens everything they need to grow into adulthood with grace and clarity. Every time your teen steps on the mat, they’ll learn how to move through life with self-respect and persistence. By treating themselves and others with dignity, they’ll discover the benefits of discipline and how it can help them to achieve their goals.
Build Self-Respect and Self-Worth
Self-respect is the cornerstone of success and teens can sometimes struggle with self-esteem, judging themselves harshly. In the world of jiu jitsu, respect is a cornerstone value. Every teen is treated with respect by instructors and fellow students alike. Best of all, teens learn that when they respect themselves, others will respect them too – and they’ll be respected wherever they go.
Learn Good Judgment
In life, the best outcome is often determined by the decision-making process and learning what good judgment is and how to use it. In Teens Jiu Jitsu classes, students learn how to make judgments in the moment using the information they have available in conjunction with their training.
At the same time, they learn how to evaluate decisions and the elements of healthy decision-making, internalizing the ability to identify good judgment and use it in their lives.
Healthy Body, Healthy Life
Today’s teens are digital natives and may not have enough opportunities to move their bodies and keep themselves healthy and fit. We all need our share of physical activity and exercise to lead healthy lives, and teenagers are no exception.
Our Teens Jiu Jitsu classes provide teens with the activity they need in a fun and social setting that builds overall fitness and tones their bodies.
How to Set and Achieve Goals
Your teen doesn’t need to know exactly what they want from life, but they do need to know how to set realistic goals and work toward them.
One of the biggest benefits of jiu jitsu training for teens is that in class, teens pursue goals constantly. Each skill they master – and each belt they earn – represents a goal they’ve achieved. By making goal-setting a practice, martial arts training prepares teens for life, giving them the tools they need to identify, set, and achieve their goals – whatever they are.

Our lead Jiu Jitsu instructor, Rodrigo Munduruca, is a greatly renowned and respected instructor, as well as an accomplished competitor.
Getting in Shape
Studying martial arts provides you with a physical challenge combined with a mental one – and teaches you to defend yourself, too. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a unique form of martial arts that teaches students to leverage their body weight to use in the ring or against an attacker. A descendant of Judo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is both a sport and a martial art – and it’s fun to learn.
Our Adult Jiu Jitsu classes are taught in a very safe and friendly environment. No matter your fitness or skill level you can practice various techniques while feeling safe and encouraged. At Seven Spears in Poway, we’ve built a positive community of members who support and push each other to reach their goals!
Building Muscle and Physical Fitness
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu provides an intense, full-body workout that’s the perfect way to lose weight, increase your muscle mass, and get into great shape.
By combining cardiovascular training with toning and training, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu students push their bodies hard and learn what they are capable of. It’s a great way to burn calories in a fun and supportive setting that encourages all students to do their best.
Practical Self-Defense Techniques
The thought of having to defend yourself against a bigger, stronger assailant might be scary, but Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is designed to help you overcome your fears.
By teaching students to take the fight to the ground where they can use chokeholds and other effective techniques to defend themselves, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu helps leverage even a small body into a huge problem for an attacker. Best of all, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu builds strength and agility, both of which help in self-defense situations.
Building Confidence and Pride
There’s no feeling quite like the feeling of knowing that your body is strong, agile, and able to do whatever you want it to do.
Studying Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gives students the knowledge that they can leverage their body’s strength to accomplish things they never thought possible. Over time, it increases self-confidence and pride – and that carries over to work, home, and every area of your personal life.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Competition
Students who have a natural competitive drive love Brazilian Jiu Jitsu because it’s a sport as well as a self-defense method.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu requires students to spar and fight in class. They can also choose to compete to prove their ability or to advance to new levels of achievement. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitions help students set goals and work toward them – and to relish the experience of victory.
